There is also a plainer argument, and it is economic.
A well-made jacket in a serious wool will hold its line for a decade. It can be taken in, let out, re-lined, re-buttoned. It carries a woman through a promotion, a change of city, a change of body. Costed across those years, it is among the least expensive garments she will own — and the only one she will not have to think about on the mornings when thinking is required elsewhere.
The suit is the antidote to the wardrobe that produces daily decisions and no answers. It removes a question rather than adding one.
Presence,Constructed
Presence is often described as though it were weather — something a woman either has or does not, arriving unbidden. It is more useful, and more true, to treat it as architecture: something designed, load-bearing, built from materials chosen for how they behave over time.
Wool has memory. Canvas holds shape. A shoulder cut correctly does not need to be squared by force.
A woman's suit still matters because it is the most honest instrument available for the half-second before she speaks — and because, unlike so much else in a professional life, it can be built exactly to specification.
